What Google's AI Mode means for your business (when most searches never reach you)

By Jess Dando5 min read

Google now answers plenty of searches itself, on the results page, before anyone clicks through to a website. That is AI Mode, and it means the goal has shifted from getting the click to being the business the AI names in its answer.

Noticed your website going a bit quiet lately, even though nothing's broken? You're not imagining it.

Google now answers a lot of searches itself, right there on the results page, before anyone clicks through to a single website. It's called AI Mode, and if you run a small business it's worth understanding, because it quietly changes how customers find you. So let me explain what's going on in plain English, and the three things actually worth doing about it.

What AI Mode actually is

You know when you Google something and, before the usual list of blue links, there's a chunky written answer at the top? That's Google's AI reading a load of websites, summarising them, and handing the searcher a finished answer.

AI Mode takes that further. Instead of ten links to go and read, you get a proper conversation-style answer that pulls from lots of sources at once. Handy for the person searching. A bit awkward for businesses who relied on being link number one.

Why fewer people are clicking

Here's the bit that's got everyone talking. When Google answers the question on the page, plenty of people simply read it and move on. They never click through to a website at all.

That's what people mean by "zero-click" search, and this year it's become the norm rather than the exception. So even a business that ranks well can see fewer visitors, because the answer got given before anyone needed to visit.

I know how that sounds. Let me talk you off the ledge.

No, this doesn't mean SEO is dead

It means the goal has shifted a little. It used to be "get the click." Now it's also "be the business the AI mentions in its answer."

Think about it from the customer's side. Someone asks Google, "who's good for a new website in Pembrokeshire?" The AI gives them a tidy answer naming a couple of businesses. You want to be one of the names in that answer. That's the whole game now, and it's very winnable, because most of your competitors haven't clocked it yet.

The three things worth doing

You don't need to panic or rip anything up. Three moves cover most of it.

Do those three and you're not fighting the change, you're riding it.

The honest summary

Google giving away answers isn't the end of getting found online. It's a nudge to be clearer, more consistent, and more genuinely helpful than the business down the road. Which, funnily enough, is what good marketing always was.

Questions people ask

Short answers to the common ones

How do I get customers when Google answers the question instead of sending them to my website?

Focus on being the business the AI names in its answer. Write clear, question-led content, keep your business description consistent everywhere, gather steady reviews, and get mentioned on other trusted websites. The click matters less than the mention now, and mentions are very winnable for a local business.

Is SEO still worth it now Google has AI Mode?

Yes, more than ever, it's just evolved. The same clear, well-structured, trustworthy content that ranks in Google's links is exactly what feeds AI answers. You're not choosing between the two, you're doing one thing that serves both.

What is Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is Google's way of answering a search with a written, conversation-style summary that pulls from many websites at once, instead of just showing a list of links. It's great for the searcher, and it means businesses now need to be quoted inside the answer, not only ranked below it.
